In Norse mythology the Draugr, or "Barrow-Wight" in old English, was a reanimated corpse that guarded the treasures it was buried with, within it's barrow. They usually came to existence when a cruel or hateful person was not buried in the proper way. They possessed superhuman strength and, of course, reeked of decay.
